KATHMANDU, Jan 6 : Saturday turned out to be the coldest day this winter in the Kathmandu valley, stated the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD).

The MFD recorded a minimum temperature of 0.7 degree Celsius in the valley on Saturday. The maximum temperature was also restricted to 18.2 degree Celsius.[break]

The valley´s minimum temperature is expected to hit the zero degree mark by Sunday morning, according to MFD. “In the next few days, temperature will go down further,” said Rajendra Shrestha, senior meteorologist at MFD. “The valley residents shall experience more chilly days ahead.”

Shrestha added, “The days will remain sunny and clear, though.” He also ruled out the possibility of winter rains and snowfall in and around the valley for at least a few days.

Last year, January 14 was the coldest day in the valley. The valley temperature had reached the freezing point (zero degree Celsius) on that day, according to the MFD. At zero degree Celsius, water starts changing into ice.

However, the valley temperature has not gone below the freezing point in the last two years. On January 12, 2010, the minimum temperature was recorded at -0.2 degree Celsius.
