The agreement on the initiative was reached between the government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation (MoFSC) Thursday.[break]
The project aims at implementing an emerging approach to help people adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change. Speaking at the program, a joint secretary at the MoFSC, Ram Prasad Lamsal said that the ministry is willing to join hands with UNDP, UNEP and IUCN for future endeavors as well.
The US$ 3.3 million project, funded by the German government, will be piloted in the Panchase area which spans across the Kaski, Parbat and Syangja districts in the western part of the country. “The project will reduce the vulnerabilities of mountain ecosystems and communities from the impacts of climate change,” said Yam Malla, the country representative of IUCN.
The government and donors have claimed that it is one of the pioneer projects on ecosystem based adaptation. Speaking at the signing ceremony, UNDP Country Director, Shoko Noda said, “I am confident that the project outcomes will be valuable for future climate adaptation initiatives of the country, and will also contribute to national policies and strategies.”
In addition to Nepal, similar initiatives are being implemented in Peru and Uganda. “From this project, we can achieve not just the anticipated results but even more if our partnership and collaboration remains strong,” said Krishna Chandra Paudel, MoFSC secretary.
