KATHMANDU: The US Embassy in Kathmandu has agreed to provide necessary assistance to the Armed Police Force (APF) to construct deep tube wells to ensure safe drinking water during major disasters.

According to a press statement issued by the US Embassy in Kathmandu on Thursday, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the US Embassy and the Armed Police Force to construct the deep tube wells near designated open spaces in the Kathmandu valley, on Tuesday. “These wells will allow the Armed Police Force to better serve the citizens of Nepal in the event of a disaster by providing safe drinking water to the displaced people,” the statement said.

The deep tube wells will be built hiring Nepali contractors and construction companies. The cost of one tube well is about $175,000. There are plans to build a total of six to seven deep tube wells, with construction scheduled to begin in November.
