KATHMANDU, June 20: The US Embassy in Kathmandu has organized a week long refugee photo exhibition on the occasion of World Refugee Day on June 20. On this day, people from across the world take time to recognize the contribution of refugees throughout the world. [BREAK]

On the first day of the program of photo exhibition, the officials of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) including other refugees gave speeches on the current status of refugees in Nepal. Likewise, brief explanations were given by refugee photographers of their 20 photos which were on display for this event.

According to the embassy, the refugee photo exhibition served as a fitting kick-off to other events held by the international community throughout the rest of the week to celebrate World Refugee Day 2013.

Since 1975, more than three million refugees have made new homes in the United States, and nearly half of them have become US citizens. Since 2007, the United States has resettled more than 67,000 Bhutanese refugees. The US government provides millions of dollars in humanitarian assistance annually to benefit the refugees and host communities in Nepal in the areas of health and education.

According to the embassy, they are proud to support the efforts of UNHCR, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the many other groups that work on behalf of refugees in Nepal and worldwide. “We commend their commitment and generosity in providing the refugees protection and assistance,” stated the press release issued by the embassy on June 20.
