KANCHANPUR, Aug 8: The Far-west Regional University Struggle Committee has announced a three-day general strike in the region from today after the government failed to fulfill their demands.

A meeting of the struggle committee on Sunday decided to organize the three-day shutdown in the region to press the government for fulfilling its demand. [break]

Among the demands of the committee, the main ones are appointment of the office-bearers, including the Vice Chancellor of the Far-west Regional University.

However, the organizers of the general strike have said that the bandh (shutdown) will not hamper the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) supplementary examinations being held from today. Similarly, ambulances, mortuary vans, vehicles carrying medical professionals and fire engines will be allowed to operate freely during the general strike.

The public transport service here has come to a standstill due to the bandh. Buses plying on long and short routes have not been operated.

Factories and industries, businesses, schools and colleges and the market are totally shut since the morning today.
