KATHMANDU, Aug 18: The United Nations (UN) is globally observing the First World Humanitarian Day on Wednesday, August 19, to honor humanitarian workers who lost their lives or got injured during service, to acknowledge the ongoing work of humanitarian staff and to draw attention to humanitarian needs worldwide. The Day was chosen by the UN General Assembly in December last year to mark the bombing of the UN office in Iraq on August 19, 2003 that killed 22 people including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Representative of the Secretary General to Iraq.

In its key message, which also incorporates honoring humanitarian workers who lost their lives during service and drawing attention to global humanitarian needs, the UN asserts, “The humanitarian community´s ability to respond rapidly, effectively and predictably to crises, natural or man made, has improved beyond all recognition in the last 20 years.”

The UN says Nepal has been facing humanitarian challenges of managing hunger, refugees, displaced people, women, children, water and sanitation. It has further identified new humanitarian challenges of handling the increasing impact of natural disasters, climate change and the effect of global recession on foreign humanitarian aids for Nepal.

The UN reveals the 2009 Nepal Humanitarian Transition Appeal has been revised upward to US$145 million and only US$74 million has been raised so far leaving the humanitarian community seeking funds amounting to US$71 million to implement priority projects during the year.
