KATHMANDU, July 1: The German Embassy in Nepal has denied reports regarding Nepal’s Electronic Passport (e-passport) procurement and printing process, saying it did not seek clarification from Nepal’s Acting Ambassador to Germany Sagar Prasad Phuyal over the issue. The embassy dismissed the reports as “false and misleading.”

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, the embassy said the German government had not summoned Phuyal for clarification regarding the e-passport procurement case. The embassy clarified in three points that Phuyal was invited to a meeting at the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, not summoned for an explanation. “Nepal’s Chargé d’Affaires in Berlin was invited to a meeting at the German Federal Foreign Office—not summoned. It may sound like a small distinction, but in diplomacy, it matters,” the statement read.

The Embassy further stated that no protest note or any other official document was handed over during the meeting.

Likewise, it said no warning or pressure was issued regarding possible consequences related to the outcome of the ongoing court proceedings over the passport procurement case. “Germany fully respects the independence of the judiciary. In fact, it is a principle enshrined in our constitution. As a matter of principle, the embassy does not comment on ongoing court proceedings, and we have not done so at any point in this case,” it clarified.
