Issuing a press statement, the UN Information Center in Kathmandu said there have been a number of erroneous reports in the media recently on the issue of the UN´s handling of Major Basnet´s repatriation from Chad.
“The Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations has not sent a letter of complaint regarding the repatriation of Major Basnet,” said the press statement. “Nor has the UN sent any letter to the Government of Nepal apologizing or admitting flaws in the process. No such letters are on record.”
A letter sent by Nepal´s Permanent Mission in New York to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu and also forwarded to the Ministry of Defense claimed that Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Edmond Mulet admitted they acted in haste due to mounting pressure for his repatriation from international human rights groups. Multe also reportedly admitted that they could not consult Nepal´s Mission before sending Basnet back to Nepal.
Various media including myrepublica.com ran reports based on the content of the letter sent from Nepal´s Permanent Mission to the UN.
The UN press statement said that "The UN stands firmly behind its decision to have Major Basnet repatriated by the Government of Nepal, due to the allegations of his involvement in serious violations of human rights".
