"The Secretary-General commends the progress on integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants and hopes for a smooth completion of the process," a spokesperson of the Secretary General said in a statement in New York. [break]
"He acknowledges the role of the political parties, Government and Nepal Army, and Maoist commanders and combatants in the efficient transfer of weapons and security of the cantonments."
The remarks of the head of the global body came Saturday when the parties resolved outstanding issues relating to the integration of the Maoist combatants and paved way for focusing on outstanding issues of constitution making.
Echoing widespread call for transitional mechanisms of international standard, Ban has also urged political parties to set up a truth and reconciliation commission and commission on disappearances in compliance with international laws.
He further said such mechanisms prioritize victims´ rights and are able to operate with full independence.
The Secretary-General has also reaffirmed that UN will continue its support to the peace process. The global body has been assisting Nepal´s peace process since signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in November 2006. A political mission of the UN was in Nepal until mid-January 2010 to assist the peace process.
