UML office set ablaze in Rautahat

RAUTAHAT, Aug 27: Despite restrictions on movement after being declared a "riot-hit area," local cadres of agitating Madhesi Morcha in Gaur set ablaze the district party office of CPN-UML Thursday morning.

Irate locals in the district headquarters of Rautahat doused the CPN-UML office in kerosene before setting it on fire. Furniture and other essential documents in the party office turned into ashes, according to Kamal Yadav, district chair of the party.According to district police office (DPO), Rautahat, the police have been searching for those involved in the arson.

Meanwhile, the family members of Rajkishor Thakur have refused to receive his body for the last three days. The body of Thakur, who died in the police firing on Tuesday, is still at Gaur Hospital.

According to the bereaved families and protestors, they will not collect Thakur's body unless the government fulfills their demands, including declaring him a martyr, compensation to the family, erection of his statue at the incident site and proper investigation into the incident, among others.

In Birgunj, the police escorted around 445 vehicles and containers carrying passengers and goods to reach their destinations, according to Chief District Officer (CDO) Keshav Raj Ghimire.

Immediately after the agitators set fire on the vehicle (Na 3 Kha 3849) on Wednesday night, security personnel had put off the fire successfully.

"We'll try to obstruct the resumption of vehicles from Thursday," said Pradeep Yadav, Parsa district chief of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal.

In Dhanusha, around two thousand supporters of the Madhesi Morcha have demonstrated carrying stones in their hands in Janakpur. As protestors gathered, all the government offices in the district headquarters were immediately shut down as per the instruction of the local administration.

Senior government officials of the DAO and security agencies closely monitored the agitators during to prevent untoward incident.

Likewise, the protests in other districts of Tarai, including Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha, Mahottari, and Bara, remained calm on Thursday.
