Following intense pressure from journalists across the country, police arrested Nem Lal Paswan of Dhanusha and Shrawan Yadav and mastermind Lalita Devi Singh of Siraha a few days after Uma´s murder at a rented room in Rajoul, Janakpur on Jan 11, 2009. [break]
The three have been in judicial custody following an order by Dhanusha District Court but Umesh Yadav, alias Swamiji, of Balhasghara-1, Dhanusha; and Chandeshwar Sah of Maheshpur-1, Dhaneshwar Sah of Thalhagoutari, Bijay Yadav and Biltu Yadav of Sitapur, and Sabheshwar Yadav of Rajpur, all in Siraha, are still at large. Similarly, Baidyanath Singh, Dhananjaya Singh and Ajay Singh of Majorgunj, Narha in Sitamadi, Bihar are also yet to be arrested.
Police claim there has been delay in legal proceedings over the three arrested due to delay in arresting the other accused. "They all have been kept on the most wanted list and we have formed a five-member special team under a deputy superintendent of police to arrest them," said Superintendent of Police Shyam Khadka, claiming he has taken up the matter with urgency since his transfer to Dhanusha last month. "The case has attracted my attention as they have not been arrested even after a year," Khadka added.
Meanwhile, Uma Singh´s mother Sushila Devi has been receiving threats to withdraw the case. She has been on the move since her daughter´s murder and has been sheltering with relatives in India and Nepal.
