KATHMANDU, Jan 9: The UCPN (Maoist) on Wednesday demanded the immediate release of its cadres held on charge of murdering Dailekh-based journalist Dekendra Thapa some eight year ago.

Issuing a press statement on behalf of the party today, UCPN (Maoist) spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota warned that the arrest could have serious ramifications for the peace process.[break]

Saying that the arrest of its cadres on the charge of conflict-era cases has violated the provisions of Comprehensive Peace Accord and Interim Constitution of Nepal, Sapkota argued that the arrest was a ploy to disrupt the ongoing peace process in the country.

“The CPA and the Interim Constitution have clearly stated that no cases can be filed with police and at court on incidents that took place in between February 13, 1996 and November 20, 2006,” Sapkota claimed in the statement.

Last Thursday, police had arrested Laxmi Ram Gharti Magar of Dwari VDC-1, and Jaya Bahadur Shahi of Raniban-1, Nirak Bahadur Gharti of Baluwatar-9 , Bir Bahadur KC of Baluwatar-7 and Harilal Pun of Dwari-3 on Friday, in connection with Thapa´s murder.

Of the five Maoist cadres arrested, four are district-level leaders of UCPN (Maoist) while the remaining one is now affiliated with the CPN-Maoist, the breakaway faction of the party.
