The ceremony was taking place in the house of Rampati Thakur in Aurangtole of Majhauliya-7 when the shootout took place. After the arrival of the groom and his relatives, participants were preparing for the wedding of Thakur´s daughter when the invitees from the groom´s side engaged in a fracas, after which gunshots were heard, police said. After the shootout, participants ran helter-skelter, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanu Thapaliya said.
Dilip, who was shot while trying to flee the wedding venue, died on the spot. Meanwhile, Bijaya breathed his last on Tuesday morning at the Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar where he was taken for treatment.
Dilip was an invitee from the groom´s side, while Bijaya was from the bride´s side, according to Mirchaiya Area Police Office.
After the shootout, the wedding was suspended, but was formally completed on Tuesday morning.
Villagers are living in fear after the incident, and everyone is tightlipped about the incident. Police have initiated a manhunt to nab the shooters.
Incidentally, the shootout occurred on the same day that Minister of State for Home Affairs Rijwan Ansari claimed during a function in Lahan that compared to Dhanusha, Bara and Kathmandu, security situation was better in Siraha and Saptari.
As if to mock his claim, a man was shot dead in Saptari too on Tuesday. Islam Miyan, the chairman of a local School Management Committee, was shot dead in Saptari by unidentified assailants.
Culprits of both the shooting incidents are still at large.
