DARJEELING, Feb 8: Two cadres of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) that has been demanding a separate Gorkhaland state were killed in police firing Tuesday.

Many GJM cadres have been injured in the incident.

Those dead have been identified as Nira Khawas (22) from Kalimpong and Rudra Gurung from Jaldhaka. [break]They were killed when the police opened fire at Jalpaigudi-based tea garden to disperse GJM cadres who had been staging a sit-in in the area.

Roshan Giri, general secretary of Morcha, said police had indiscriminately opened fire at the peaceful demonstration. He added the injured are being treated at Jalpaigudi and Kalimpong-based hospitals.

However, the police claimed they resorted to firing after the cadres began to throw stones at them.

Darjeeling has become tense following the incident. GJM cadres have set ablaze Kharsang-based police post and Kalimpong and Darjeeling-based government offices and vehicles to protest the killing.

GJM has announced an indefinite strike in Darjeeling from Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested Wilson Chapramari, member of local assembly of Jalpaigudi, for abetting the protestors.

Trinamul Congress, which remained silent on earlier occasions, has urged Morcha to stop the Gorkhaland revolution while Jalpaigudi Indigenous Development Council has warned that it would force GJM cadres to leave Darjeeling.
