KATHMANDU, March 31: Doctors will return to duty at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) on Thursday ending their 17-day strike, following the formation of a five-member committee by the Education Ministry on Wednesday to probe into all alleged irregularities at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) since the last academic year.

The committee formed under the chairmanship of former education secretary Jayaram Giri includes senior TUTH professors Dr Mahesh Prasad Khakurel and Dr Prakash Sundar Shrestha as members. It has been asked to submit its report within 15 days. [break]

“We have accepted the probe committee and also welcome the step and will now focus our agitation on the Office of Dean and campus,” Secretary of Free Students´ Union (FSU) at the Maharajgunj Campus Sudan Thapa said.

“We will return to duty from Thursday morning. We are feeling guilty for the suffering of thousands of patients and been pining to work,” President of Nepal University Teachers´ Association, Maharajgunj Medical Campus Chapter, Dr Karbir Nath Yogi said.

The doctors were to return to duty a couple of hours after the meeting at the education ministry but decided to delay it by a day to protest the manhandling of doctors at the hospital earlier on the day. Resident Dr Rajendra Basyal and teachers Dr Sunil Chandra Jha and Bharat Jha were manhandled by locals on the hospital premises.

“We will stage a sit-in with black arm-bands in front of the hospital from 9-10 in the morning and return to duty with the arm-bands after 10,” President of Nepal Resident Doctors´ Association Dr Bishnu Pokharel said.

Meanwhile, the joint struggle committee at the hospital condemned the manhandling of doctors and urged the administration to probe into the incident, identify the culprits and take action against them.

Services at the hospital have been affected since March 15 after it decided to stop admitting patients. Emergency services have also been halted since last Tuesday.

The doctors, teachers and students began the strike to protest the alleged rigging of the entrance exams for postgraduate studies in medicine by the dean of the institute.
