The hospital, which was running in massive losses in the past, has been running on break-even for the last two months, the administration said.[break]
"Operating loss of the hospital has come down to zero within the two months of the appointment of the new director, "TU Vice Chancellor Professor Hira Bahadur Maharjan told Republica, adding, "And the credit goes to the new director."
He said that the TU administration need not have to worry to pay the hospital staff. Until two months back, the hospital was unable to pay salaries to its staff on time. TU had to lend money to the hospital to pay salaries. TUTH already owes TU Rs 660 million in past dues. Professor Maharjan also said that several improvements in overall service delivery is evident at TUTH after Dr Koirala´s appointment.
Koirala has introduced a slew of measures to lift the country´s largest hospital out of mess. Dr Koirala, who successfully developed Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center into an international standard cardiac center.
TUTH since two months ago has stopped paying bogus overtime to staffers and the hospital has been saving Rs 7 million a month.
"Even those staffers who work only during office hours were taking overtime payment," Dr Koirala said.
The hospital administration said the bed occupancy rate at the hospital has reached almost 100 percent, which used to only 60 to 70 percent in the past. Earlier, it was alleged that most of the doctors would divert patients admitted at TUTH to their private clinics. The earning of hospital laboratory has increased with the raise in bed occupancy rate. Dr Koirala has instructed all doctors to move the patients on to other wards within two hours of their admission at emergency.
Similarly, Dr Koirala has ended the practice of closing the ticket counter for lunch hour. Now, staff at the ticket counter go for lunch turn by turn, without closing the counter and patients can buy tickets from 10 am to 5 pm.
