KATHMANDU, April 12: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has expressed concerns on data security.  The TRC and Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP)'s tenure ends today – four years after both the transitional justice bodies – were established in February 2015.

“We hope that the government safeguards the data during the transition and after new members are appointed,” Dr. Madhavi Bhatta, a member at the TRC said. She added that the transitional bodies had already handed the data to provincial governments in the federal setup. “It is crucial that the government ensures the protection of data.”

"Of the 77 districts, the government needs to pay special attention in Dipayal," Bhatta said.

The commissions were mandated to complete investigations into conflict-era cases and ensure justice to the victims within two years. The government extended their deadlines by two more years to complete the given tasks. However, the commissioners are retiring without accomplishing the given task.

Of more than 60,000 cases filed at the transitional justice bodies, the TRC has concluded preliminary investigations into about 3,000 cases. The CIEDP said their work was largely affected due to the lack of cooperation from the government.

The government now wants to reconstitute the commissions and has formed a committee to recommend new commissioners. The committee is expected to recommend new members for the commissions within a couple of weeks.
