The government raised the fares of diesel-run vehicles by 9.9 percent and petrol-run taxis by 5 percent. Over the past one year, the price of diesel has increased to Rs 61 per liter from Rs 55. [break]
"A joint meeting of Department of Transport Management (DoTM) and entrepreneurs decided to hike the fares keeping in view the rise in diesel price by 10.9 percent over the year," Sarad Chandra Poudel, director general of the department, said.
The government had last increased the transportation fares in March 2009 after introducing a scientific fare fixing method.
As per the new review, fare for a distance longer than 250 km in the Tarai has been fixed at Rs 1.30 per km and Rs 1.37 for a distance in between 25 and 250 km in the Tarai and Kathmandu Valley. Similarly, Rs 11 to Rs 19 fares have been fixed for a distance below 25km in the capital.
Fares in the hill districts has been fixed at Rs 1.76 per km. The fare in deluxe buses and minibuses has been hiked by 20 percent.
Taxi fare has been raised by 5 percent to Rs 23 per km with flag-down charge at Rs 10. Under the fresh revision, fare for taxis registered to ferry tourists from Tribhuvan International Airport has been raised to Rs 315 for up to five km and Rs 45.15 per for every additional kilometer.
