KATHMANDU, July 5: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa has criticized the government's handling of sensitive constitutional issues, saying ministers have been making irresponsible public remarks that could create unnecessary tensions.
Addressing a party review programme on the government's first 100 days, Thapa said issues such as provincial names, language, inclusion and constitutional rights require careful handling, but members of the ruling coalition have been making conflicting and casual statements.

He said the ruling parties have failed to respect the sensitivities considered during the drafting of the constitution, warning that such an approach could inflame disputes.
Thapa reiterated that the NC supports constitutional amendment but stressed that any revision should be carried out through a careful and well-planned process rather than on an ad hoc basis.
He also cautioned that issues related to rights, language and inclusion become highly significant when they are brought into public debate, urging the government not to treat Nepal's diversity lightly or make reckless statements on such sensitive matters.
