POKHARA, Aug 7: In an attempt to address anomalies in the tourism sector, Pokhara Tourism Council (PTC) in association with Switzerland-based research organization National Centers of Competence in Research (NCCR) is preparing a code of conduct for tourism industry stakeholders.

Officials of Tourism Council said that discussions would start from September with stakeholders to collect their suggestions for preparing the code of conduct. President of PTC Tikaram Sapkota said that code of conduct would be prepared within a year and will be proposed to the government for recommendation.[break]

He said, "Tourism sector is facing problems time and again and irregularities are growing in absence of guidelines."

NRCC is conducting a research in ´tourism for sustainable peace´. The organization is planning to give Rs 350,000 to the council for preparing the code of conduct. "After the implementation of code of conduct, we are hopeful that it will address many problems," Sapkota said.

He said the content of the code of conduct will be finalized after discussions with stakeholders. "Besides, we will consult with institutions that will implement and execute the policy," he added.

"The code of conduct will basically stop people from harming nature and will encourage healthy competition," he said adding that this will ask entrepreneurs to operate the actual business for which they have licenses. The code of conduct will also mention the punishment for violating it.

Tejendra Shrestha, president of Restaurant and Bar Association of Nepal (REBAN), said the code of conduct is necessary to regulate the tourism industry.

"The punishment should be strict to make sure the policy is implemented," he added. He said the code of conduct is more important for those who are operating dance bars, massage parlors and night clubs.
