KATHMANDU, May 11: While rumors about attempts being made to form a new government are making the rounds, top leaders from the ruling UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML held a secret meeting at New Baneshwar, Monday evening.

Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai from the Maoists and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and KP Sharma Oli of CPN-UML were present at the meeting.[break]

Oli said they discussed current politics ranging from formation of a national consensus government, taking the peace process to a logical conclusion, constitution writing and the issue of term extension for the Constituent Assembly (CA).

He, however, refused to divulge details about the talks held. "I can´t share everything about the talks among the top leaders because some of the issues are confidential and it´s too early to say anything," Oli told Republica.

Oli said he put forth the same opinions that he had made public to media persons earlier in the day during talks with other leaders.

While Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal is away on a visit to Turkey, Oli, speaking at an interaction with reporters on Monday, demanded Khanal´s resignation, accusing him of being unable to form a consensus government as he had committed himself to doing.

Oli had said that Khanal, who is also chairman of the CPN-UML, must step down and pave the way for a national consensus government.

Oli said it was time to bid adieu to this government as the last three months were an absolute waste of time.

Also, Nepali Congress (NC) leaders have intensified bilateral talks with other parties in recent days.

NC leader Shekhar Koirala said they have made it clear to Maoist Chairman Dahal and other leaders that they cannot accept a CA term extension without seeing some concrete progress in the peace process. "We have clearly told Dahal that a CA term extension can be contemplated only if we reach a stage where we can categorize the former Maoist combatants before May 28 for integration and rehabilitation," he told Republica.

Those privy to the inter-party talks say the leaders are exchanging ideas and proposals with each other on various issues and they are in a preliminary stage.
