Top leaders meeting to discuss peace process today

KATHMANDU, May 23: The top leaders of UCPN (M), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are meeting at Gokarna Forest Golf Resort on Monday morning in their bid to resolve outstanding issues related to peace process, mainly the management of over 19,000 Maoist combatants.



Prime minister´s Press Advisor Surya Thapa told Republica that the leaders are expected to reach an understanding on integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants. [break]



“The bilateral and trilateral meetings of leaders, held till Sunday, are likely to resolve the contentious issues related to the peace process,” Thapa said. Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, who chairs the Special Committee responsible for combatant management, has called the meeting of the committee for Monday morning. While the top leaders are set to meet at 8 am on Monday, the Special Committee meeting is scheduled to take place two hours later.



On Sunday, Khanal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal discussed contentious issues related to combatant integration.
