Those killed are Ambika Mahato, Dara Mahato and Maoist’s Bhojpura autonomous state member Ram Prakash Yadav.[break]
Tarai Mukti Morcha, an armed outfit, has owned responsibility for the incident. A man who named himself Agni, the army commander of Morcha for Bara, Parsa and Rauthat called journalists and owned the responsibility.
The assailants came on the motorbike and fired at them while they were returning from a party at Ganjabhawanipur at 9:45 p.m.
Bara district chairman of Unified CPN (Maoist) Hari Prasad Chaulagain confirmed that those killed in the incident were local Maoist leaders.
He said that Kanaiya Yadav, the area secretary, and Siyaram Kushbah were injured. Yadav, who was shot at head and shoulder, is receiving treatment in Kathmandu.
The police is yet to identify the assailants. “We are searching for the criminals,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pokharel said.
Kalaiya, the district headquarters of Bara, is closed completely while there was not much effect of the strike in Birgunj till Thursday afternoon.
UCPN (Maoist) called an indefinite general strike in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat for Thursday in a protest. “We will plan more program according to situation,” Maoist central member Anjana Bisanke said. “The strike will continue till the culprits are arrested.”
Bhojpura State Committee of the Maoists issued a press release demanding action against the culprits and compensation to the families of the deceased.
