KATHMANDU, Oct 23: Kathmandu Jazz Festival 2013 starts today, much to the excitement of music enthusiasts and musicians alike. The jazz celebration will continue for five more days, with the last celebration organized as a grand finale on October 30. The finale will see the artists play together and create a musical extravagance for the listeners.

Mike del Ferro, an acclaimed composer and pianist from the Netherlands, is popular for his solo piano, trio music with bass and drums and fusion with local/traditional/folk music. He counts musicians like Keith Jarrett, Bach and Herbie Hancock as his inspiration. Mike has travelled to more than a hundred countries in his journey as a musician. This trip to Nepal is his first, and he speaks about how excited he is to be a part of Jazzmandu in Nepal.

What is the most special thing about jazz?

For me, it has always been about the freedom of creating music on the spot.

Who are some of the artists, from the Jazzmandu line-up, that you’re looking forward to meeting?

I’m most looking forward to meeting the Nepali traditional musicians. And the other artists, as well.

Have you listened to any Nepali jazz artists previously?

To be honest, I have only heard your traditional music, but, like I mentioned before, I’m very much looking forward to meeting Nepali jazz artists as well.

Do you have plans to collaborate with any Nepali artist?

Oh yes, there will be a big fusion on the closing night and I’m excited about that.

Music festivals are the most convenient way to meet different artists at once. What are you hoping to learn from the artists you meet here?

After visiting 108 countries, I’m not surprised anymore that I am going to be surprised! Nepal will be my 109th country and I’m very curious regarding who I am going to meet. I only hear great stories.
