KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The Nepali Congress (NC) led by Gagan Thapa has claimed that a total of 2,652 General Convention delegates—approximately 57 per cent—participated in the Special General Convention.
Devaraj Chalise, spokesperson for the Gagan-led NC, said that out of the total 4,635 delegates with voting rights, 2,652 were present and actively participated in the leadership selection process.

Issuing an official statement, Chalise noted that when the Special General Convention was registered at the party office on October 15, signatures of 2,488 delegates were submitted, and only 29 delegates later withdrew their signatures. “All delegates present at the convention registered their names and participated in the debates and voting process,” he added.
The NC said that the second Special General Convention, held from January 11 to 13, was conducted fully in accordance with party rules, with the participation of a majority of delegates, making it entirely lawful.
Chalise’s statement came after the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction of the party submitted documentary evidence to the Election Commission (EC) on Friday, claiming that 885 General Convention representatives who had earlier signed a demand for a Special General Convention later withdrew their signatures. Based on this claim, the Deuba-led faction has urged the EC to invalidate the Special General Convention held from January 11 to 13.
