Talking to a group of media persons led by Reporters´ Club Nepal in its campaign to exert pressure on the political leadership for early election, Thapa said introducing new provisions would delay the polls. “Election is a must to resolve the current political deadlock. Election cannot take place if new provisions are introduced now,” he said. [break]
Arguing that it would be foolishness on the part of major political parties to introduce the threshold, Thapa suggested that new provisions must not be introduced so as to create environment conducive to holding polls within the stipulated timeframe.
Thapa´s remarks come at a time when Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are arguing that threshold is a must for parties to get elected under the proportional system. However, UCPN (Maoist) and United Democratic Madhesi Party (UDMF) have supported the demand mainly raised by the fringe parties.
Thapa also said that it would be foolish to seek resignation of Regmi as the chief justice. “Earlier, the same parties had no problems with Regmi holding the posts both as the head of the government and the judiciary. Now they are talking nonsense,” he said.
Expressing confidence that the election would be held by mid-December at any cost, Thapa argued that the Regmi-led government would hold free and fair election. “There is no point creating havoc by demanding announcement of the date for election. There will be election by mid-December at any cost,” he added.
