According to the police, nine people, including eight of a family, were killed, while another three went missing after a landslide swept away three houses at Thukima-6 in Taplejung on Wednesday night. Similarly, two others were injured in the incident. [break]
Of the 10 killed in the landslide, Ashta Bahadur Siba, 69, his wife Jayamaya, 60, Salman Siba, 40, Manmaya Siba, 37, Khagendra Siba, 12, Naniram Siba, 14, Nainakala Siba, 10, Aashish Siba, 6, belonged to the same family.
Sukamaya Siba, who was injured in the landslide, also breathed his last while being taken to district headquarters for the treatment. Sukamaya´s two sons, who were also injured, are receiving treatment at a local health center.
Deputy Superintendent of Police in Taplejung Govinda Acharya said those missing in the landslide are Tej Bahadur Siba, 28, Kaji Siba, 10, and Ashika Siba, 4.
A joint rescue team of Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police force had reached the incident site on Thursday afternoon.
A pall of gloom has descended on the village after the incident. According to Nani Bahadur Kedem, principal of Mahendra Lower Secondary School, five of the deceased were students of the school.
In yet another incident of landslide, one person was killed and another two from the same family went missing in Ratmata-5, Jhagajholi in Sindhuli after a landslide swept their houses on Thursday morning.
According to Sindhuli police, Ram Bahadur Chaulagain, 70, was killed in the landslide while his wife Santamaya, 60, and grand daughter Tulasha have gone missing since the incident.
The landslide caused by the downpour that started since Wednesday morning had swept away Chaulagain´s house at around 7 am in the morning, according to DSP Sanu Ram Bhattarai, chief of the Sindhuli police.
BP highway blocked
The landslide at Ratmata-3 triggered by torrential downpour has also blocked the Banepa-Bardibas section of the BP Highway. According to the police, the landslide has damaged 200 meter stretch of the road section.
Other villages also under threat
After the incident in Thukima, people living in the north western areas of Taplejung are also living in the fear of landslide as it has been raining in the area for the last two weeks. According to Bimal Baniya of Mehile-1, they are having sleepless nights due to the threat of landslide. He said Mehele, Surumkhim, Yamfudin and Khewang VDCs in the district are under greater risk of landslides.
