KATHMANDU, April 30: Supply of essential commodities like vegetables, milk and fuel is gradually becoming normal in Kathmandu Valley, according to government officials.

Though rumors of the market facing shortage of essential commodities are making rounds, they say supply of essential commodities is improving with each passing day and that there was no reason to worry about. Many people fear essential commodities will be in short supply after Saturday's earthquake.

Talking to Republica, Mukunda Ghimire, spokesperson of Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), said supply of fuel, including liquefied petroleum (LP) gas, has not been affected at all. "We have been receiving regular supply from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and supplying accordingly to the market," he added.

Similar is the case with supply of fresh vegetables. Though vegetables supply was down until Tuesday, it is gradually increasing, according to the officials of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB). "The market received only around 200 tons of vegetables each on Monday and Tuesday. But average daily supply improved to 450 tons on Wednesday and Thursday," Ramesh Dangol, planning officer of the board, told Republica. "This is sufficient to meet the demand of Kathmandu Valley as large number of people has moved out to support quake victims."

Average daily demand for vegetables in Kathmandu Valley stands at around 650 tons.

Likewise, officials of Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) -- the state owned dairy producer -- said collection of fresh milk from farmers is improving. "The normal daily demand for milk in Kathmandu Valley stands at around 125,000 liters. We supplied 102,000 liters each on Wednesday and Thursday," Ganga Timalsina, general manager of DDC, said. According to him, earthquake has damaged DDC's five chilling centers across the country. But we have been managing supply from other sources, he added.
