MOGADISHU, Feb 21 – A suicide car bomber killed at least 10 people near a police training camp in Somalia´s capital Mogadishu on Monday, and the number of dead was likely to rise, police said.

"We saw a speeding car toward us, and it soon exploded. Every place was soon covered with flames and smoke," Hassan Ali, a police officer told Reuters.[break]

"I have counted 10 dead people and I am sure there are more dead ones. We cannot get the exact number of dead now.

We are busy collecting flesh and people are shocked here."

He said there were likely casualties in nearby houses, because fragments of the bomb, shrapnel and wrecked car parts had landed on various buildings in the area.

Seredi, the police camp, is about 500 meters from the port of Mogadishu.

It was not clear who was behind the attack in the Muslim Horn of Africa nation that has been plagued by violence and anarchy since dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted in 1991.

Al Shabaab, which professes loyalty to al Qaeda, has waged a three-year insurgency to topple the U.N.-backed interim government they consider a stooge of the West.

The government has been hemmed into just a few blocks of the capital since the rebels launched their insurgency.
