POKHARA, May 1: Following Maoist announcement of a general strike, tourists visiting Pokhara have cut their length of stay there. Hotel bookings by tourists planning to visit Nepal have also been canceled.

According to President of Western Region Hotel Association and Managing Director of local Butterfly hotel Gobindaraj Bahari, the threat of strike has compelled tourists to fly back home.[break]

“Many tourists have cut their length of stay and some are preparing to return to their countries,” informed Pahari adding that 15 Belgian tourists, who had booked hotel rooms for two weeks, had recently canceled their booking at his hotel.

It has been learnt that several Indian tourists planning to visit Nepal have also cancelled their trips to Nepal.

Some tourists are also worried that they might get stranded as they are running short of budget.

Scores of tourists returned to Kathmandu from Pokhara after hearing about indefinite general strike called by the Maoists. Some tourists are still to get their air tickets to return to Kathmandu.
