KATHMANDU, Jan. 5: Speakers at an interaction program here today stressed the need of amending the existing laws and change in perception to end torture and ongoing cases of violence against women (VAW).

Speaking at the program organized by the Sa-Shakti Nepal, Nepali Congress central member Dr Minendra Rijal said VAW would not decease until amendment to the constitution and change in attitude was brought.[break]

He said only amendment to the constitution would not suffice to ensure rights of women in the male-dominated society. On the occasion, legal practitioner Dinesh Tripathi said amendment to the constitution was needed as existing law has safeguarded the rapists.

He said our constitution has given only 35 days to lodge the plaints against the rapists and added this provision should be amended by ending the time limit for filing the case.

Prof Dr Surendra KC said the VAW would not end at once but gradually after reducing discrimination practiced at home. Sa-Shakti Party is the political party established in 2066 B.S to advocate the rights of women. RSS
