SPORTS BRIEFS: Wushu team off to Vietnam

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: An eight member Nepali wushu team left for Ho Chi Min, Vietnam, on Saturday to compete in the Eighth Asian Championship to be held there from August 21 to 25. In men´s sansau section Raj Kumar Rai will compete in the 52 kg, Yubaraj Gurung in 56 kg and thaulo as well. Similarly, Niraj Ale Magar will compete in chang chuan all-round and Raju Maharjan in nan chuan all-round .



Jharana Gurung will compete in women´s 56 kg sansau, Bidhya Maharjan in thaulo´s nan chuan all round and Binita Maharjan in taichi chuan all round. All seven players were gold medalist of the Sixth National Games held in Far Western Region. Pratap Thapa is the team manager while Pranil Dhoj Karki is the coach. Karki has already gone towards Vietnam. The five day long event will feature players from 55 countries. [break]


GoldenGate lifts futsal title


KATHMANDU: GoldenGate A on Saturday clinched the title of First University Open Knockout Futsal title. GoldenGate defeated Whitehouse 4-1 in the final held at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium. Ravi Thapa, Nirajan Malla, Shiva Shrestha and Sulav Maskey scored one apiece for the winning time. Kamal Shrestha got the consolation for Whitehouse. Shiva Shrestha of winning side was declared the best player of the tournament. As the champion GoldenGate bagged a purse of Rs 25,000 and the runnuer up White House received Rs 15,000. The two-day tournament featured 32 teams.



Krishna Thapa wins rapid chess


KATHMANDU: Krishna Thapa of Hetauda won the title of Chandra Narayan Suddhakar Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament on Saturday. Thapa played drew his match with national champion Badrilal Nepali in the last round and finished with total of 4.5 rounds in the five round tournament played under Swiss league format. He bagged Rs 2,500. Niranjan Prajapati secured second place with four points in his kitty while Nepali finished third, Ganeshman Duwal fourth and Nikesh Duwal fifth. The second to fifth place received Rs 1,000 each.
