SPORTS BRIEFS: U-13 players bade farewell

KATHMANDU, May 16: Nepal’s U-13 football team left for Iran on Monday to participate in the AFC U-13 Football Festival. All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) President Ganesh Thapa bade farewell to the 24-member team during a program at the Dasharath Stadium.



The tournament is scheduled to be held from May 19-24. Chet Narayan Shrestha is the coach of the Nepali team while Achyut Raj Ghimire is the manager. [break]



U-14 basketball team to visit Japan for friendlies


KATHMANDU: Nepal’s U-14 national basketball team is scheduled to visit Japan from May 24 to June 2 for friendly matches upon the invitation of Japan Basketball Association (JBA). Addressing the media in the capital on Monday, Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) President Lama Tendi Sherpa informed that the national team will play six friendly matches with school teams of Japan and also with the winner of Tokyo Junior High School Tournament. The players for the friendlies were selected from the National U-14 Basketball Festival held last September. After the selection, they were given training by head coach Dinesh Chandra Nakarmi for two months.



Everest, CAB win


KATHMANDU: Everest College and CAB won their respective matches in the ongoing Inter-college TU BBA Cup T20 cricket Tournament on Monday organized by K and K College. Everest beat Prime by 41 runs at army ground, Bhaktapur while CAB registered seven wickets victory over Kathford. Losing the toss, Everest batted first and scored 144 runs. Prime were bowled out in just 103 runs off 20 overs. In another match, Kathford won the toss and elected to bat. With the tight bowling from CAB, Kathford was all out for 70 runs off 19 overs. CAB reached the target in just 11.2 overs losing three wickets.



Scholarships for athletes’ children


KATHMANDU: Dr Khagendra Sports Foundation provided funds for the education of athlete Jit Bahadur KC’s grandson on Monday at the National Sports Council (NSC). KC had secured bronze -- the first medal for Nepal in the international level -- at the First Asian Track and Field Championship held in Manila, Philippines in 1973. The foundation provided an annual fee of Rs 37,900 for Riyoj KC, the athlete’s grandson, as part of its program to provide scholarships to the children of sportsmen. The foundation also donated two wheel barrows and a locker with 12 shelves to the NSC. All Nepal Football Association President Ganesh Thapa was also felicitated on the occasion. Meanwhile, South Asian Games gold medalist Deepak Bista, athlete Baikuntha Manandhar and NSC Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary jointly launched a book written by sports analyst Diwakar Lal Amatya featuring renowned sports personalities of Nepal.
