Lama clinches chess title
KATHMANDU: Bibek Lama of Mahankal School won the title of Inter-school Chess Tournament organized by Bindhyabasini Secondary School, Tokha, in the boys’ category on Thursday. Lama won all five matches of the tournament played in Swiss League format. Prajwal Simkhada of Deep Jyoti School finished second. Meanwhile, Bina Jaiswal of Deep Jyoti won the girls’ title with 4.5 points. Purnima Jaiswal stood second.
Joshi wins U-9 girls’ singles
KATHMANDU: Utsabi Joshi won the U-9 girls’ singles title in the Third KESA Group, JTI Open Junior Tennis Tournament organized by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association on Thursday. Joshi defeated Riyasha Baidya 10-5, 10-6 in the final match played at the Satdobato Tennis Court. Joshi also entered the semifinals of the U-10 girls’ singles category along with Cathleen Mathema, Karuna Gauchan and Annie Mathema. Joshi thrashed Medhavi Giri 9-0 while Cathleen struggled past Baidya 9-8.
Yuva Moktan gave a walkover to Gauchan while Annie received a bye. In U-10 boys’ singles, Samrakshan Bhushan Bajracharya set up a title clash against Prashant Basnet. Bajracharya eased past Pranab Khanal 9-1 in the semifinal on Thursday, while Basnet beat Deepesh Khatri 9-3.
Likewise, Mayanka Rana, Rachel Sadoff, Bibhuti Karki and Bijisha Shrestha entered the last four of U-14 girls’ singles, while Achal Thapa and Ananda Gauchan reached the semifinals of U-16 boys’ singles defeating Abhishek Bastola and Suman Karki respectively.
Jeevan Singh Gharti advanced into the U-14 boys’ singles semifinals defeating Kastup Pandey 9-3. Likewise, Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya, Swaraj KC, Abhishek Timalsina and Aryan Giri made it to the last four of U-9 boys’ singles.
