Joshi was selected in the bantam weight (63kg) category while Maharjan qualified for the feather weight (68kg). Joshi and Maharjan were adjudged the best players to represent Nepal in the championship through a selection tournament conducted at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall on April 10. The players are flying two weeks ahead of the tournament so that they get ample time for training in Korea.
SAG gold medalist Deepak Bista said during the function that they were able to send only two players because the National Sports Council sanctioned less budget for the championship. NTA Vice-president Sunil Malla said the players will gain international exposure through this championship.
NAPA, Greece consulate general meet
KATHMANDU: Nepal Association of Pankration Athlima (NAPA) and Greece’s Consulate General for Nepal Jaykumar Nath Shah held a meeting on Friday for the development and promotion of the sports in Nepal. Pankration is the oldest form of martial arts of ‘Yunan’. NAPA President Buddha Ratna Shrestha and General Secretary Shyambhuratna Dangol held meetings with Shah at the Consulate Office in capital. Shah on the occasion said that he would leave no stone unturned for the development of sports in Nepal. Shah also suggested NAPA to coordinate with Nepal-Greece Friendship and Cultural Association.
TU beat Bhaktapur
KATHMANDU: TU registered six-wicket victory over Bhaktapur on Friday in the Pepsi senior regional T-20 cricket selection at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur. Winning the toss, Bhaktapur opted to bat first and scored 114 runs losing seven wickets in regular 20 overs. Nishant Gadhtoda scored unbeaten 44 runs, including five boundaries, off 43 balls for Bhaktapur. Tejendra Rajbhandari, man-of-the-match, grabbed three wickets while Bam Bahadur Bam and Sudeep Sharma took two wickets each. In chasing the modest total, TU met the target in 18.5 overs losing four wickets. Prem Raj Upreti topscored 42 runs, including three boundaries and a six, off 35 balls. With the victory, TU have gained a two-point lead over Bhaktapur and stand in the second position.
Police, Army in final
KATHMANDU: Nepal Police Club (NPC) on Friday set up a title clash with Nepal Army in the ongoing Third Sabhapati Cup National men’s Open Volleyball Tournament winning their respective matches. NPC defeated Armed Police Force in three straight sets 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 in the first semifinal. In the other semifinal, Army beat the hosts Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center 25-13, 25-21, 25-21. Similarly, in the Second Laxmi Narayan Memorial Cup National Women’s Volleyball Tournament, defending champions New Diamond School had to settle for the third place. New Diamond overcame the hosts Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center 25-16, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19. The final in both the categories will be held on Saturday.
