SPORTS BRIEFS: NSC staffers help boxing coach Shrestha

KATHMANDU, July 9: Contract staffers at the National Sports Council (NSC) raised Rs 76,314 to help boxing coach Krishna Man Shrestha, who is suffering from motor neuron disease (MND). All the contract staffers donated their one day´s salary to help Shrestha. NSC Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama handed over a check to Shrestha amidst a function at NSC on Monday.



According to Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) President Rajiv Shrestha, coach Shrestha needs at least Rs 800,000 for the treatment. [break]NBA had provided Rs 50,000 in April and has been raising funds for helping coach Shrestha, who had won silver medal in the Fifth South Asian Games.



Karatekas receive assistance

KATHMANDU: Nepal Sotokan Karate-do Federation President Niwas Gopal Baidya presented tracksuits to all 25 members of the national karate team on Monday. Baidya presented the tracksuits worth Rs 50,000 out of his own resources. National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama and Baidya handed over the tracksuits to the players amidst a function in the capital on Monday.



National, Pyramid reach second round

KATHMANDU: Boys´ teams of National College and Pyramid College registered victories in the First Pyramid Inter College 3X3 Basketball Tournament on Monday. National ´A´ defeated Unified 12-3 and National ´B´ edged past VS Niketan ´B´ 13-3 to qualify to the pre-quarterfinals. Likewise, Pyramid ´B´ thrashed Unified 12-2 and the ´C´ team of the host pulled a 17-8 victory over VS Niketan ´B´. Altogether 24 teams have participated in the boys´ section of the tournament while seven teams are participating in the girls´ section.



NSC to probe NOC finances

KATHMANDU: National Sports Council (NSC) formed a five-member probe committee on Monday to investigate into the finances of the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) and other national associations. "The probe committee is formed to investigate financial irregularities and non-transparent acts of all the associations including Nepal Olympic Committee," stated a press release issued by the NSC.



The probe committee led by NSC Vice-chairman Pitambar Timsina includes NSC Treasurer Indra Bahadur Thing, NSC Financial Administration Chief Basudev Acharya and a representative of Youth and Sports Ministry. NSC Planning Department Chief Kamal Khanal is the secretary of the probe committee.
