SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal take on Thailand Friday

KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Nepali will begin their ACC Women´s T20 Championship campaign playing against Thailand in Kuwait on Friday.



Nepal is pitted in group B including Malaysia, UAE and hosts Kuwait while Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Bhutan and Oman are in group B in the event featuring 10 teams from Asian countries. [break]



Nepal will play against UAE on Saturday, Kuwait on Sunday and Malaysia on Monday. Nepali team had played practice matches against Pakistan before leaving for Kuwait.



Nepal had finished runners-up in the first edition of the event held in Malaysia in 2007 while they were restricted to third spot in another edition held two years earlier.



Nepal had lost to Hong Kong in semifinal on the occasion and defeated China for third place.



LRI, Daffodil in semis



KATHMANDU
: LRI and the hosts Daffodil School advanced into the semifinals of the Dabur Glucose-D Fifth Daffodil Junior Boys´ Football Tournament after thumping victories on Thursday.



LRI thrashed Chelsea 9-1 with a hat-trick from Swastik Adhikari. Likewise, Jenish Syangden scored a hat-trick as Daffodil hammered Brihaspati 6-0. Other teams to qualify for the semifinals are Snowland and Read Model. In the Dabur Glucose-D Fourth Daffodil Senior Boys´ Basketball Tournament, Pennwood, Baba Boarding School, Sambotta and NIMS entered the last four winning their respective matches.



Neric, Ideal in boys´ final



KATHMANDU: Neric edged out LRI 33-24 and Ideal Model defeated Innovative 49-35 to reach the final of the National U-14 Basketball Festival in the boys´ category on Thursday. In the match held at Morgan International College, Sagar Basnet contributed 17 points for Neric.



Meanwhile, Ideal Model´s Krishna Bista scored 17 points against Innovative. In the girls´ category, Mahendra Bhawan thrashed Angels´ Heart 38-10 and Gyanodaya ousted Valley Public 23-17 to set up a title clash.



Preparations complete for int´l volleyball


KATHMANDU: Preparations for the second edition of the International Club Workers Volleyball Championship have been completed, the organizers Youth Sports Groups announced at a press meet on Thursday. The event, which will feature seven teams from India, Bangladesh and hosts Nepal, will kick off on Saturday at the Martyrs Memorial Ground, Bhaktapur. Power Development Board and Water Development Board from Bangladesh, Eastern Rail from India, and Myagdi Volleyball Training Center and three departmental teams -- Nepal Police Club, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army Club -- from Nepal will participate in the event, Gautam Lasiba, the chief of the organizing committee said.
