SPORTS BRIEFS: Mahottari win title

KATHMANDU, Jan 11: Hosts Mahottari won the title of the Madhyamanchal Inter District Cricket Tournament organized by District Sports Development Committee, Mahottari.



The hosts humiliated Chitwan with 87-run victory in the final played at Mahottari Cricket Ground on Tuesday. [break]



Mahottari, electing to bat first, put up 219/8 in the allotted 38 overs. Yunil Shrestha scored 56 runs off 54 balls while Sunil Shah struck unbeaten 53 runs off 34 balls. Abhishek Gautam added 36 runs for the hosts. Diesh Khatri took four wickets for Chitwan.



In the run chase, Chitwan were all out for 132 runs in 33.5 overs as Santosh Baral took three wickets. Amit Jha and Puspa Thapa claimed two wickets each for Mohattari to pull a huge margin victory. Vijay Thapa (34 runs) and Dipesh Khatri (29 runs) were the major contributors for Chitwan.



Yunil Shrestha got man of the match award while Vijay Thapa was adjudged man of the series. Kumar Thapa of Bara received prize for best batsman while Dipesh Khatri was declared the best bowler of the tournament.



Gyanu Baba in lead



Defending champions Gyanu Baba Higher Secondary School lead the Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball with 33 points after defeating Tops School on Tuesday.



In other matches of the day held at New Bus Park, Balaju, Nepal Police Club (NPC), Tops and Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) also registered victories.



In the Pokhara derby, Gyanu Baba eased past Tops 25-15, 25-17, 25-18 in straight sets to extend their winning run to 11 matches.



Second placed NPC also registered a comfortable 25-7, 25-10, 25-10 win over Angel´s Heart, who are at the bottom of the table. NPC have 31 points from 11 matches. They have lost only one match, against Gyanu Baba, in the tournament. Angel´s Heart have 15 points.



Meanwhile, Tops defeated last edition´s runners-up New Diamond Academy 25-15, 25-22, 25-10 to stay on NPC´s heels with 26 points. WMMC saw off MMC Kaski 25-10, 25-18, 25-17. They are trailing behind third placed Tops by two points. New Diamond are on 17 points, one ahead of sixth placed MMC.



As the tournament is drawing to a close, Ramila Tandukar of New Diamond is leading the poll for the best player of the tournament. Tandukar has received 4,849 votes as of Monday, far ahead of national player Manju Gurung of Gyanu Baba who has 1,302.



The best player is chosen on the basis of viewers´ votes. The best player will get a Lifan scooter.



Until the fifth edition, only players from Pokhara had won the award, but the scenario is looking different this time with only two more days remaining in the tournament.
