SPORTS BRIEFS: Maharjan duo advance

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Babu Ratna Maharjan and Rajendra Maharjan’s pair on Tuesday defeated Raju Dangol and Rajesh Maharjan’s pair 21-16, 21-17 during the preliminary rounds of the Yala Cup Badminton Tournament being held in the capital.



Likewise, Amir Shakya teamed up with Dibya to beat the pair of Rajendra Maharjan and Mahesh Maharjan 21-14, 21-15, Bir Maharjan and Binod Maharjan’s pair overcame Bhibhushan Tamrakar and Yaman Tamrakar’s team 21-19, 20-22, 21-14. [break]



In other matches, Mahesh Bajracharya and Shanta Ram Bajracharya’s pair, Ganga Maharjan and Dipan Maharjan’s pair, Ratna Kumar Bajracharya and Pradeep Shakya’s pair, Raj Bhai Maharjan and Aman Maharjan’s pair, Sanil Shakya and Sunil Shakya’s pair, Kapil K Shahi and Kamal Raj Karnikar’s pair and Anil Bajracharya and Manish Bajracharya’s pair also emerged victorious.



Shrestha elected president


KATHMANDU: The general assembly of Nepal China Sports Friendship Society held on Monday elected a 21-member executive committee under the presidency of Jeevan Ram Shrestha. Ganga Bahadur Thapa Magar is the vice president while Umesh Shrestha and Chaturananda Baidhya have been elected general secretary and secretary, respectively.



Keshav Rayamajhi has been elected the treasurer. Lilamani Paudel and Suman Shrestha are the advisors of the committee. The president of Nepal Olympic Committee and Member Secretary of the National Sports Council are selected as the honorary advisors. The members of the committee Lama Tendi Sherpa have been elected in sports committee, Keshav Rayamajhi in the media committee and Bhimsen Rajbhak has been elected in media committee. Earlier, Yan Houlan, the Chinese ambassador to Nepal inaugurated the general assembly.



Nepal blue beats Nepal Red


KATHMANDU: Nepal Blue registered 28 runs victory over Nepal Red on Tuesday during the practice match prior to the ACC Twenty 20 Cricket Tournament. In the match played at TU Cricket Ground, Nepal Blue opted to bat first and scored 116 runs losing nine wickets. Anil Mandal was the highest scorer with 39 runs off 38 balls. Basanta Regmi grabbed three wicket for Nepal Red.



Chasing the total of 117 runs, Nepal Red could only manage to score 88 runs for the fall of eight wickets. Subash Khakurel scored 23 runs for the losing side. Rahul BK grabbed three wickets off four overs conceding 12 runs. The ACC Twenty 20 Cricket Tournament will be held December 3-11 in Kathmandu.



Nepal registers 31 runs win


KATHMANDU: A century knock from Anil Mandal helped Nepal to register 31 runs victory over Islam Gymkhana on Wednesday in its fifth friendly at Mumbai. Nepali team is in the Mumbai Tour as the preparation for the upcoming ICC World T20 Qualifiers to be held in the UAE in March. Losing the toss Nepali team was invited to bat first and scored 206 runs for the loss of four wickets. Nepal did not start well as its opener Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee were out on seven runs and 12 runs respectively. Paras Khadka and Anil Mandal shared a 47-run partnership for the third wicket. Mandal faced 58 for his first century. Mandal was unbeaten on 107 runs off 58 balls with 11 boundaries and six huge sixes. Islam Gymkhana managed to score 175 runs off 20 overs losing nine wickets.



JYC-Pune match postponed


POKHARA: The first semifinal match of the 10th Aaha Gold Cup Football Tournament between Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club and Pune FC of India scheduled for Wednesday has been called off due to continuous rainfall in Pokhara. According to the organizer Sahara Club, the match will be conducted on Thursday.



Shrestha elected NBA prez


KATHMANDU: Ramesh Kumar Shrestha was unanimously elected as the president of Nepal Badminton Association on Wednesday during the third general assembly of the association. Shrestha was the vice-president of the association in the previous committee headed by Prakash Bahadur Shahi. A 19-member committee was also elected unanimously.



Dhruba Kumar Shrestha, Pratap Adhikari, Pitambar Timisina and Madhav Bahadur Thapa were elected as the vice-presidents. Ramji Bahadur Shrestha and Birendra Shrestha were appointed general secretary and secretary respectively, while Dipendra Kumar Shrestha was appointed as the treasurer.



Doping test for Nat’l Games


KATHMANDU: Athletes will go through the doping test during the Sixth National Games to be held from February 26 to March 4. Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) President Nilendraraj Shrestha made this announcement on Wednesday. “Doping will be tested through players’ urine and National Sports Council (NSC) has decided to conduct the test. If NSC fails to conduct the test, NAAA will do so on its own,” Shrestha said, adding, “The doping test will make the competition fair and will raise awareness among athletes.” However, there won’t be doping test of every athlete but the test will be conducted on random basis. Doping test can only be conducted by laboratories approved by World Anti Doping Agency (WADA). There has not been doping test in the previous editions of National Games.



Onta Golden Sprints Meet on Saturday


KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Road Runners Alumni in collaboration with Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) is organizing Onta Golden Sprints Meet at the Dashrath Stadium on Saturday. The meet is being organized by the students of famous sprinter Raghu Raj Onta. A renowned Nepali runner of the 1980s, Onta is a seven-time national champion in 100 meter race and had also participated in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Onta’s students have raised funds to conduct the meet that will feature four events each in men’s and women’s sections. The winner of each event will bag a purse of Rs 3,000 while the second and third position holders will receive Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 each.
