SPORTS BRIEFS: Machhapuchchhre wins title

KATHMANDU, April 26: Machhapuchchhre Bank clinched the title of Inter-bank Volleyball Tournament for the fifth time on Friday. Machhapuchchhre defeated Kumari Bank 25-17, 24-26, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8 in the final played at the court of host Nepal Rastra Bank. In the six editions of the tournament held so far, Agriculture Development Bank is the only other team to have won the title.



Winner Machhapuchchhre won Rs 50,000 while runner-up Kumari bagged Rs 40,000. Meanwhile, Global Bank secured third position in the tournament organized to mark the 58th anniversary of Nepal Rastra Bank. Global defeated the host Nepal Rastra Bank 25-21, 25-22, 25-14 in the third place play-off.[break]



Pun leads on first day



KATHMANDU
: Niraj Pun took the lead on the first day of the Pakistan Ambassador´s Cup Golf Tournament on Friday. Pun, who plays with five handicap allowances, scored 41 points in the tournament being played under stableford format with ¾ handicap allowances at the Royal Nepal Golf Club.



Prem Gurung finished the day in second position with 38 points. HR Gurung lies in the third spot with 35 points while Neeraj SJB Rana is fourth with 34 points. A total of 29 amateur golfers played on Friday. Forty-four other golfers, including eight ladies, are to participate in the tournament on Saturday.



Jeet Kune Do seminar begins Saturday



KATHMANDU
: Nepal Jeet Kune Do Martial Arts Association is organizing the third seminar and workshop on the art of Jeet Kune Do on Saturday and Sunday in the capital. Organizing a press conference on Friday, general secretary of the association Shiva Bahadur Thapa informed that Sifu Juaquin Marcelo, international instructor from Spain, will conduct the seminar. Altogether 120 coaches from Nepal, 12 from India and four from Sri Lanka are participating in the seminar.



According to president of the association Lok Bahadur Khadka, the coaches will get an opportunity to learn about footwork, kicks and punches during the seminar.



Shrestha nominated in ASTC



KATHMANDU
: Nilendra Raj Shrestha, secretary general of Nepal Triathlon Association, has been nominated as a member of the Asian Paratriathlon Confederation (ASTC). According to an e-mail sent by Shrestha on Friday, the 22nd congress of ASTC nominated Shrestha for the post. The congress also nominated Philip Penaloza of Hong Kong as president, while Peter Wee Ling of China and Tomikawa "Tommy" Masamitsu of Japan were nominated as members. Meanwhile, the Asian Triathlon Championship is set to begin Saturday. Nepal´s athlete Rajiv Kumar Gurung of Nepal Army will compete in sprint category on Sunday.
