Sports briefs: Kathmandu wins President's Cup qualifiers

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu district won the Central Region qualifiers for the President’s Cup Running Shield on Monday with a total of 139 points. Chitwan finished second with 136 points while Lalitpur secured the third position with 65 points. Sangita Khadka (20 minutes 33.90 seconds) of Kathmandu and Baburam Majhi (17 minutes 51.54 seconds) of Nuwakot clinched gold in the girls’ and boys’ 5,000m race respectively. Similarly, Sujana Tamang of Kathmandu won gold in girls’ shot-put and Niraj Chaudhary of Chitwan in boys’ shot-put. In the 800m sprint, Bivek Tamang of Sindhupalchowk and Sangita Tiwari of Lalitpur claimed gold in the boys’ and girls’ category respectively. Ashish Chaudhary of Lalitpur and Binu Tamang of Chitwan took gold in the boys’ and girls’ long-jump respectively. Kathmandu secured first position in the boys’ 4x400m relay while Chitwan won the girls’ event.



Police claims volleyball title

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nepal Police Club on Monday claimed the title of Open National Women’s Volleyball held at the Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center, Jawalakhel. In the title clash, Police defeated New Diamond Academy 25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 25-20. Champion Police bagged a purse of Rs 100,000 while runner-up New Diamond received Rs 50,000. Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center A team defeated its B team for third place honors and received a cash prize of Rs 25,000. Chuda Khadka and Kopila Uprety of Police were declared the best spiker and blocker respectively while Salina Shrestha of New Diamond received the best defense award. CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya distributed prizes to the winners. Altogether six teams had competed in the three-day event organized by Republican Sports Federation of Nepal.
