SPORTS BRIEFS: Indian Embassy, Kantipur in semis

KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Indian Embassy advanced into the semifinals of the 12th Soaltee Crowne Plaza Super Sixes Cricket Tournament defeating Laxmi Bank by five wickets on Thursday.



In the first quarterfinal match held at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Kirtipur, Indian Embassy elected to field first, restricting Laxmi Bank to 46 runs for three wickets in the allotted five overs. The embassy then met the target in 2.4 overs losing one wicket. [break]



In another quarterfinal match, Kantipur Group defeated Bank of Asia by four wickets. Batting first, Bank of Asia scored 73 runs at the cost of one wicket in five overs.



Diwesh Dangol retired after topscoring for the team with 31 runs from 14 balls. In reply, Kantipur scored 75 runs losing two wickets in 4.5 overs to secure a semifinal berth.



Meanwhile, Nepal SBI Bank also advanced into the last four ousting Siddhartha Bank by eight runs. SBI Bank elected to bat first, scoring 83 runs for one wicket in the allotted overs.

Monish Shrestha scored the highest 33 runs off 12 balls for his side. Min Bahadur Gurung retired after scoring 32 runs off 12 balls. Despite Suraj Timilsina´s thumping 38 runs, Siddhartha Bank were all out for 75 runs in five overs.



In the last quarterfinal match, Standard Chartered Bank beat Citizens Bank by five wickets. Fielding first, Standard Chartered held Citizens Bank to 64 runs for four wickets. In reply, Standard Chartered met the target of 65 runs losing one wicket in 4.5 overs. Subash Sharma contributed 34 runs for the winners.



The semifinals and the final will be held on Saturday.





Youth rating chess kicks off



KATHMANDU, Oct 7: The First National Youth of Nation Rating Chess Tournament kicked off on Thursday at Khwapring School, Bhaktapur.



Nepal chess champion Badri Lal Nepali, veteran chess player Ganesh Man Duwal, Uttam Raj Thapa, FIDE Master Manish Hamal and Hera Kaji Maharjan each earned one point after winning their respective matches on the inaugural day.



Other players to register victories were Rajan Chhetri, Shiva Bhakta Gaiju, Balaram Napit, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, Andys Gwacha, Binod Gyawali, Bikram Jati, Shyam Sundar Shrestha, Pushpa Raj Karmacharya, Himal Lama and Bivek Lama.



Likewise, Prashant Bhashima, Sunil Ratna Shakya, Raj Prajapati, Mohan Singh Pradhan, Jagannath Tamrakar, Roshan Paudel, Bikesh Lakhe and Bikash Kuluju also won their respective matches.



The tournament with a total cash prize of Rs 61,000 will run till Tuesday. Altogether 117 chess players from 17 districts are competing in the event.





Northern Region win Media Cup



HETAUDA, Oct 7:  Northern Region Media Group defended the title of the District-wide Media Cup Seven ´A´ Side Football Tournament in Makawanpur on Thursday.



The media group defeated Sandesh Daily 2-1 in tiebreaker in the final of the tournament organized by NSJF, Makawanpur branch. The match went to penalty shootout after the regulation time ended in a goalless draw.



Keshav Lama and Sangam Napit scored for the winners in the tiebreaker, whereas only Suvas Bidari scored for Sandesh Daily. Lama was adjudged man-of-the-match.



Altogether 11 teams of different publications and media groups had participated in the tournament.





Birendra Sainik, Takshashila in final



KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Defending champions Birendra Sainik School and Takshashila Academy advanced into the final of the Fourth Inter-school Invitational Pepsi Cup Football Tournament on Thursday.



Birendra Sainik defeated Bhaktapur English School 1-0 at the Sanothimi sports ground to secure final berth. Roshan Rai of the wining squad netted the lone goal in the 25th minute. Rai was adjudged the man-of-the-match.



Meanwhile, Takshashila beat Shramik Shanti School 2-0 to set up the title clash with the defending champions. Man-of-the-match Anil Gurung and Suraj Hamal scored in the 17th and 42nd minute, respectively.
