SPORTS BRIEFS: Good show by Nepali chess players

KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Nepali players´ performance remained satisfactory on Monday in the seventh and eighth rounds of the ongoing Lake City International Chess Tournament being held in Rajasthan, India. [break]



Fide Master Manish Hamal played a draw with Narayan Shekhawat of India (rated 1497) in the seventh round and defeated unrated Dharmes Adwani in the other round to add six points in his account. Manish is in 14th position among 142 players.



Youth players Niraj Niraula, Raju Subedi and Purushottam Chaulagain have collected 5.5 points apiece. Niraj lost to Atudev of India (rated 2116) in round seven and downed Laxmi Sriwastav (rated 1876) in the other round.



Raju (rated 1893) won both boards of the day. In the seventh round, he edged past 1673 rated Swapna Karun Das and in the next round he defeated Milan Rokka of Nepal (rated 1725). Likewise, Purushottam, too, had wins in both the matches. He beat Rohan Shinde (rated 1607) in the seventh round and saw off Ishwar Ram Take in the eighth. Hari Chandra Chaulagain was defeated in the seventh round but he won the next round.



Other players Milan Rokka, Bikram Priya and Jeevan Mainali accumulated four points apiece while Kumar Gurung was had to be content with two points.





Twin win for police



KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Nepal Police Club (NPC) won both the matches played on Monday in the ongoing Fourth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament being held at New Bus Park.



Police registered comfortable straight sets victories in both the matches. Police downed Angel Heart Academy 25-22, 25-10, 25-19 and Deep Jyoti School 25-8, 25-20, 25-20. Police have accumulated 10 points from six matches played so far with four wins and two defeats.



Fishtail Academy also had an easy 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 win over New Diamond in straight sets.



Meanwhile, the match between Fishtail and Gyanu Baba was stopped after two sets due to bad light. Gyanu Baba had won both the sets. According to the organizers, the match will be played on Tuesday. Both of them have added 10 points in their kitties winning all five matches played.



In another match, PLA Sports Club edged past New Diamond 25-22, 25-10, 25-19.





Taekwondo, archery players off to Korea



KATHMANDU, Dec 21: A 10-member Nepali team left for Incheon, South Korea, on Monday to take part in taekwondo and archery training.







Archers Krishna Maya Syangtan, Radhika Bulun and Dil Kumari Thapa and taekwondo players Ranjan Shrestha, Pradeep Ale Magar, Gyani Chunara and Sita Tamang will undergo training in Korea. Team leader Hemanta Dangi said the training will last till January 16.



National Sports Council acting member-secretary Samim Miya Ansari bade farewell to the team.
