SPORTS BRIEFS: CAN releases curator Pandey

KATHMANDU, March 17: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has gracefully released ground manager Komal Pandey from his duty.



Annual meeting of CAN took the decision to release Pandey from his duty. Pandey was curator of the TU Cricket grounds for the last 10 years. [break]



Likewise, the meeting decided to renew the contract of Nepal´s Sri Lankan coach Roy Luke Dias. Dias has been coaching Nepal since 2001. His present contract is to end at the end of March.



The meeting also appointed Bijay Kumar Sharma as the chief of national selection committee, a CAN source said.





Govt to award SAG medalists



KATHMANDU, March 17: The government is all set to provide cash prize to 11th South Asian Games (SAG) medalists as per its commitment.



A meeting of the council of ministers on Wednesday decided to provide Rs 18.6 million to the SAG medalists.



The National Sports Council (NSC) had announced, prior to the commencement of SAG, to award Rs 300,000, Rs 200,000 and Rs 100,000 for players securing gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in individual events.



The cash prize for team events was announced to be Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 for the top three positions.



Nepal had won 8 gold, 9 silver and 20 bronze medals in the 11th SAG.





Football tournament for "human rights"



KATHMANDU, March 17: A football tournament for male, female and the third gender was organized at the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) grounds, Satdobato to celebrate the fourth International Social Work Day. The event was organized with the slogan, "human rights for all".



The event was inaugurated on March 16 by Bhumika Shrestha, a human rights activist. During the inauguration, she emphasized on the importance of social work for the development of the society. She also said that even the third genders had human rights which had to be respected.



Fourteen teams from various colleges and social work organizations participated in the football tournament.



Rachana Upadhyay, one of the organizers of the event, said, "Through this we basically wanted to make people aware that male, female and the third gender all have equal rights. We also wanted to promote the message that social work should be considered as a profession as well."



The final match is going to be held on March 18 between Clean Nepal and Classic College at the ANFA grounds.
