SPORTS BRIEFS: Bista leaves for US

KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Taekwondo ace Deepak Bista left for the United States on Sunday to attend ´Save the Himalayas´ to be held in New York on Tuesday. National Trust for Nature Conservation nominated Bista to represent Nepal at the event.



Bista will hoist the national flag of Nepal at the event which is being held on the occasion of the 65th General Assembly of the United Nations. [break]During the meeting, Bista will draw the attention of the world community toward conservation of the Himalayas in Nepal.



Earlier in December 2009, the government of Nepal had held a cabinet meeting at Kalapatthar, the base camp of Mount Everest, to highlight the effects of global warming on the Himalayas.



Following the cabinet meeting, a program titled ´Summiteers Sumit to Save the Himalayas´ was held in Copenhagen, Denmark on December 11 last year.



Kasthamandap in QF



Kasthamandap advanced into the quarterfinals of the Pathshala Cup First National Mini Basketball Tournament on Sunday. Kashtamandap defeated the hosts Pathshala Nepal 12-6 in the league match of Group ´C´. Kasthamandap finished as the runners-up of the group, behind New Summit, to qualify for the next round.


Prime win title



Prime College lifted the title of the Second Bern Hardt Cup Inter-college Boys´ Basketball Tournament on Sunday. Prime had finished as runners-up in the first edition of the tournament. Prime edged out VS Niketan 50-43 in the final match held at the court of Bern Hardt College, Balkhu. Siddhartha Maharjan, who was later adjudged the most valuable player, contributed 15 points for Prime. Bijaya Burja of VS Niketan scored the highest 19 points during the match.
