SPORTS BRIEFS: Balaju lift title

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Balaju Dojo on Saturday lifted the title of the Sixth Bagmati Zonal Karate and Kick-boxing Championship with four gold, five silver and two bronze medals in their kitty.



Similarly, with four golds, one silver and four bronze medals, Bauddha Dojo finished second while Naraharipur Dojo took the third place honor with four golds, one silver and one bronze. [break]



Bikash Magar of the hosts and Sarita Shrestha of Bauddha won the best male and female kick boxing player award respectively in the event organized by Nepal Sitorio Karate Association, Samakhushi Branch Dojo. National Dojo, Tinkune won the fair play award.



Altogether 435 male and 135 female players participated in the two-day event in 20 categories of official karate and eight categories of kick-boxing.





Birju Maharjan wins gold



KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Birju Maharjan of Gurjudhara won gold in the open weight category in the First Nationwide Kyokushin Full Contact Men´s Karate Championship on Saturday.



Maharjan defeated Madhav KC of Main Dojo in the final held at the ground of Taudaha Higher Secondary School. Amir Kumar Patel of Birgunj secured third place and Aruj Gurung of Pokhara took the best player award.



In 40 kg category, Alis Kafle of Kyokushin Budokai, Hemraj Moktan and Rajkumar Karki of Makawanpur took the top three spots respectively while Sachin Basnet of the hosts Charghare Dojo was declared the best player.



In 41-50 kg, Dawa Lama of Makawanpur, Anil Gurung of Sasambhu and Chhabi Paudel of Pokhara finished in the top three spots and Rajendra Tamang of Chitwan was named the best player.



Indra Tamang of Gwarko, Rajesh Lama of Makawanpur and Bijay Rai of Swayambhu secured the top three positions in 51-60 kg and Padam Lama of Central Dojo took the best player award.





Jaycees Cup kicks off



KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Golden Gate, Himalayan Whitehouse and Prime College started on a winning note in the second Jaycees Cup Basketball Tournament that kicked off Saturday at Patan Campus court.



In boys´ category, Golden Gate defeated Xavier International 60-46 riding on 21 points of Pradip Ghale. Whitehouse saw off Caribbean College 45-37. Robin Khatri contributed 14 points for the winning side. Prime had a narrow 65-62 victory over Triton. Rabi Giri topscored with 20 points for Prime.



In girls´ section, Xavier International edged past Whitehouse 26-17 as Sima Karki scored 11 points. Likewise Suchitra Gurung netted nine points as Nasa defeated Prime 27-25. Earlier, Sanjiv Shilpakar, the president of the organizer Patan Jaycees, inaugurated the tournament.
