The race will take eight days to complete as the participants will have to travel from the Annapurna Base Camp situated 4,130 m above sea level to Tada Pani, Dhana, Marpha, Muktinath, Thorang-la Pass, Manang, Tilicho Lake before concluding in Jomsom. [break]Altogether 28 athletes -- 23 foreigners and five Nepalis -- have registered their names for the race. Majority of the foreign participants are from Switzerland and France.
Sindhu lifts volleyball trophy
KATHMANDU: Sindhu Youth Sports Committee defeated Manakamana Youth Club to lift the Eighth Sangam Youth Cup Volleyball Tournament. Sindhu defeated Manakamana 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 in the final match played at Kothe, Sindhupalchowk on Wednesday. Sindhu received Rs 20,000 and Manakamana got Rs 10,000 and runner-up trophy. The semifinalists of the tournament Irkhu Sports Development Committee and Melamchi Youth Club received Rs 2,500 as consolation prize. Prakash Deuja received the best player award while best spiker went to Dinesh Deuja and best lifter to Hom Bahadhur Pandit of Sindhu. Deepak Baral of Manakamana received the best blocker award. Bishal Nepal of Sangam Youth Club was awarded with the title of the emerging player. Meanwhile the president of Sangam Club, Naresh Karki handed over a purse of Rs 5,000 to Ram Krishna Karki, a member of the club and former volleyball player, for treatment. Karki has been suffering from the kidney disease.
Sagarmatha clinches volleyball title
LUKLA: Sagarmatha Samaj Sewa won the Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Cup District-wide Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday in Solukhumbu. Sagarmatha defeated Janajagaran Youth Club 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 in straight sets. With the win, Sagarmatha bagged a purse of Rs 40,111 while Janajagaran had to settle for Rs 35,111. The tournament was organized in order to promote Khumbu Tourism Festival 2011 at Kharka Buffer Zone area. After the final, Sagarmatha also defeated the dream team comprising the best players from the five participating teams with a scoreline of 25-27, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18.
Pokhara’s lifts two titles
RUKUM: Pokhara clinched the titles of the Open Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Tournament defeating Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) in both the categories on Wednesday in Rukum. With the win, the men’s team of Pokhara bagged a purse of Rs 100,000 while the women’s team bagged Rs 50,000. PLA team had to satisfy with Rs 50,000 for the men’s category while the women’s team received Rs 25,000. The semifinalists in the men’s category, Rukum Aathbikaskot and Rukumeli Youth Group bagged Rs 10,000 each while the women’s semifinalists walked away with Rs 5,000 each.
