SP to field candidates in all 240 constituencies

KATHMANDU, Sept 2: In a bid to avoid being labeled as a ´regional party´, the Rajendra Mahato-led Sadbhavana Party (SP) has announced that it will file candidacies in all the 240 constituencies of the country for the Constituent Assembly election slated for November 19.



Briefing a two-day national gathering that began in the capital on Monday, Manish Suman, the party´s General Secretary, said, "We will also field candidates in all the hilly districts so as to establish our party as a national party." [break]



"The two-day national gathering is focused on the strength and weakness of our organization in the hilly constituencies," said Suman.

He added that the party was upbeat about the hilly constituencies it has ´good´ organization there. "Our party is poised to win election in Manang, Parwat, Nuwakot, Sindhuli, Tanhu, Kaski, Dhading and Kavre," he claimed.



Suman informed that the party will announce the names of candidates for all the constituencies before the third week of September. "We are holding a parliamentary committee meeting on September 14 in the capital, and the meeting will finalize the names of the candidates for the November polls," he said.

Joint General Secretary Arjun Upreti later told Republica that they were also trying to forge ´electoral adjustment´ with other Madhes-based parties within a few weeks.

On the demands put forth by the agitating 33 political parties, Suman informed that a political document endorsed in the ongoing meeting has decided that Baidya´s demand of holding a roundtable conference is “meaningless" as it would not resolve the disputed issues.



However, he was quick to add that the party was not trying to brush aside all of Baidya´s demands. Other Madhes-based parties also eye hills  Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Nepal and Sharat Singh Bhandari-led National Madhes Socialist Party (NMSP) have informed that they are also planning to field candidates in the hills.

It may be noted here that besides Sadbhavana Party, the Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar-led MPRF-D and the Mahanth Thakur-led Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) have already announced that they would field candidates in the hilly districts.



"We will file candidacies in 56 out of 75 districts in the hills," said MPRF-D Secretary Arvind Sah.

The Upendra Yadav-led MPRF-N has claimed that it will win from some of the Hill districts as well. "We have good presence in several hilly constituencies," said a CC member of the party, Dr Ram Swarth Ray.



He further said that within a week his party will announce the names of candidates, including the names of candidates to be fielded in the hilly constituencies.
