A survey conducted by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) on Thursday said social networking sites like facebook in their office is fruitful and helpful to their profession. [break]
"FNJ members use social media not only for communication but also for generating and making their news stories better through research and verifying information," states the finding of the research conducted among 1,119 journalists.
The survey further says that more than 90 percent of the respondents felt social media as an important tool that enhanced their professional output. Similarly, 85.6 percent of the respondents use social networking sites as a source of news.
It further says that Nepali journalists spend 4.32 hours on an average on the internet daily.
The survey carried out from mid-April to mid-May this year further found that the journalists aged between 20-29 years use social media most extensively for professional and personal advancement.
"This group has been using the social media for the longest duration and utilizing them better," the survey states.
It further says that a majority of journalists surveyed use social networking sites such as Facebook but do not use blogs and tools like Twitter to promote their stories and hold discussions.
The survey had also focused on the perception of social media among journalists. The survey found that a majority of journalists surveyed perceive social media as one of the best ways to reach out to their readers and colleagues.
The survey result also says 87.6 percent of the respondents access the internet daily, primarily from their offices.
The survey further says that most of the journalists who participated in the survey always use a desktop to access the internet while others use laptop and one-third of the respondents sometimes use mobile devices to access internet.
The survey further says that almost all the respondents are familiar with various social networking sites and use them mostly for personal purposes.
