UDAYAPUR (BELTAR), Dec 26: Extraction of stones, sand and gravel in the Chure region continues unabated despite directives from the president, prime minister and home minister to stop it immediately. [break]

The District Development Committee, Udayapur had written to the Indian crusher company BSC C&C JV Nepal Pvt Ltd -- established four years ago at Kadmaha in Madhupatti VDC-9 -- a week ago to remove all crusher plants but the company has ignored such instructions. Mahavir Aggregate Industries Pvt Ltd of Tapeshwari-9, Udayapur has also been continuing extraction.

Thousands of tons of construction materials for the 1,650 km Delhi-Guwahati Highway in India are being smuggled from Nepal daily. Locals said the crusher companies have been smuggling construction materials during night time since the issue grabbed media attention.

Though these plants have got permission at the district level, Forest Act 1993 has stipulated evaluation of the environmental impact for extracting more than 50 cubic meters of sand, gravel and stones daily. Legal experts say the cabinet should form a high level technical team to investigate into the matter.
